Djomeh/Friday
Djomeh is a charmingly plain story about the problems
of making love on a farm-boy's wages. Our eponymous hero is a young
Afghan lad who works on a small dairy farm in the remote Iranian countryside.
He has a difficult time with his co-worker and guardian, Habib, a grown
man with a short temper. But every morning Djomeh accompanies the farm's
owner Mr. Mahmoud on errands to neighboring villages, and gradually
he opens up to this unlikely father-figure. He has fallen for a silent
girl who works at a grocery counter; but Iranian custom doesn't permit
open courtship, and Djomeh needs someone to speak for him.
Co-winner of the Camera d'Or for the best debut feature
